As primates, example is very important to us. We copy and mimic, and we learn. We are always looking for new ways to do things and looking at those ‘in the know’ to give us new ideas that will assist us in our main aim in life – to survive.
Example is also a very powerful tool to achieve a desired outcome – good or bad. We have to become selective when we chose which example to follow. Sometimes we follow the crowd because we feel that the more people that follow the better the example will be. Unfortunately, this is often not the case.
Sometimes we shield ourselves from reality by associating with people who are just like us. They think the same, believe the same and even look the same, but the example we get is not anything that will help us make our lives better, probably just the opposite, all we do is maintain the status quo and live in an unchallenged (unchallengeable?) cocoon.
It is a well documented fact the people who are either overweight or obese like to stick together. They do so because they feel more comfortable being amongst people who look the same way and act the same way as they do. It is a comfortable place to be where your shortcomings are never challenged and where there is no new example to influence a change in anything. These (good) example free zones are very dangerous indeed. As they grow, so it becomes more and more difficult for any meaningful change to take place. If this situation continues unchecked, anybody who is not overweight could be seen to being the odd one out.
Time to look for new examples? People who we can look up to and who are able to show us the way. These people are rare, but when they surface they have great power. They can inspire us to make change. We need to welcome them into our lives and recognize what they can do for us. If we want to lose weight permanently, there is someone out there who can give us a good example. All we have to do is to open our minds to change and welcome in those who can help us – through example. Or, you can show example yourself..why not? A suggestion? Get The Slim Habit.
