When you’re trying to lose weight, jumping on the scales every morning can sometimes be a rewarding experience, a surprise even, but most times it’s a bit of a disappointment. Despite all your efforts your weight loss is usually very small – and then there are those depressing days when the scales go the wrong way.
It’s easy to forget that your bodyweight can vary by up to five pounds between one day and the next. It very much depends upon what you had to eat the day before, how much you had to eat, how much water you had to drink and what time you had your meals. It can also be affected by reducing your calorie intake too quickly.
When you diet and reduce your calorie intake, you will lose weight. Your fat cells will lose the fat they’ve been storing. When this happens your Ventromedial Hypothalamus (VMH) - part of the Hypothalamus, which is your energy storage manager in your brain – gets the message that your energy levels are low. How? Because you produce less of a hormone called leptin, which is produced in your fat cells and circulates in your bloodstream.
Your VMH is always on the lookout for leptin signals. When it senses your leptin level is low, it turns on your vagus nerve – this communicates the feeling of hunger between your brain and your stomach – and guess what, you feel hungry. Your body starts to work against you and restore your energy storage levels to what they were Reducing calorie intake will always have this effect, which is why diets are never a long-term solution to weight loss.
The Slim Habit is designed so that you don’t trigger a reaction from your VMH. You will learn new habits, learn to adopt a new lifestyle and work with Low Calorie Days and become an expert at managing your weight not watching it.
